Overheard at the WIFI Place May 8, 2011

On Mother’s Day.

A 35 year old son is showing his mother something on his laptop screen. She says to him, “So his queen can only jump once, right?” It’s now 1:25pm. It’s going to be a long afternoon for those two.

I’m now nine miles from John D. MacDonald’s home in Sarasota; he wrote the great Travis McGee novels. And eight miles from Stephen King’s winter home, also in Sarasota; he is a writer, too. Maybe I’ll take a drive, see some high walls around famous homes, and leave this little family vignette to its own denouement.

P.S. Stephen King’s recent novel Duma Key is set in Florida, and it is very worthwhile.
