I brought a transistor radio to class in the Eighth Grade at St. Irenaeus Grade School, Park Forest Illinois, and at about 11:00am our teacher, Sr. Mary Senan RSM, let us turn it on. We heard the CBS radio broadcast with Walter Cronkite announcing CDR Alan Shepard Jr. making the first U.S. manned space flight. Freedom 7 (Mercury 3) flew for 15 minutes and 28 seconds, reaching an altitude of 116.5 miles with a velocity of 5,134 mph.
