Capital Punishment January 19, 2011

I used to subscribe to satellite TV and satellite internet, so I could connect from my trailer wherever I am, but the service was poor and the prices were high, so I haven’t been connected for about two years now. Instead, I connect the PC via WIFI, and I watch DVDs as I eat dinner, and occasionally on weekend afternoons, when it is loneliest.

I find some good DVDs at Wal-Mart. They sell old DVDs in a $5 bin in every electronics department in their Supercenters. I picked up three the other day, which don’t seem that old to me. They are among my favorites: The Green Mile with Tom Hanks and many other excellent actors; Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; and Galaxy Quest. I have the last one recorded on my DVD, but it has become a favorite (a parody on Star Trek and William Shatner), and I don’t want to lose it by a mistaken button press.

I only recently realized that my strong anti-abortion belief was only half of the issue. Being pro-life must mean being against any human imposed termination of life, including euthanasia and execution. I have not become anti-war, because of the kill-or-be-killed concept, but I have not finished working that out yet. It is now clear to me (maybe 45 years since I became anti-abortion) that capital punishment is as wrong now as it was when the occupied Israelis and the Roman Italians executed Jesus Christ.

I was surprised that Steven King found a measure of sensitivity and empathy that belies his reputation to write The Green Mile. I always cry through the second half of the movie, and now I will find the book to read it – usually a more powerful experience for me. My favorites of his writing are the Gunslinger series, but I think that The Green Mile may elbow its way in there.

If you haven’t seen the movie recently, I know where you can find it – cheap!

Kind Of Hard To Get One That Fits January 18, 2011

Former VP Dick Cheney has heart problems, which we have all heard about.

“I’ll have to make a decision at some point whether or not I want to go for a transplant,” he told NBC News. “But we haven’t addressed that yet.”

“Cheney, who turns 70 later this month, has had five heart attacks, the latest in February 2010.

“The former vice president, who served under President George W. Bush, told NBC that he has adapted to the heart pump and its accessories, which include a vest that holds the pump control, two batteries and a power cord that runs to the mechanism inside his chest.”

Lots of hardware. It seems like the decision would be an easy one. But, there’s a complication in Cheney’s case. Not just any heart will fit in place of his because, like the Grinch, he has a heart “that’s two sizes too small.”

Time For a New Rule January 17, 2011

The editors of online news pages have become incredibly lazy.

They get a picture of a bum, and they show it exclusively, on EVERY article, around the clock, for WEEKS.

Remember this one? I really got sick of it in a hurry:

Now, it’s THIS one:

I am looking for a good news feed online WITHOUT pictures. That may be an oxymoron.

(No, no. That’s not a description of the guys in the pictures; it means a contradiction in terms. Like “military intelligence.”)

“She resolved to end the love affair with Ramon tonight . . . summarily, like Martha Stewart ripping the sand vein out of a shrimp’s tail . . . though the term “love affair” now struck her as a ridiculous euphemism . . . not unlike “sand vein,” which is after all an intestine, not a vein . . . and that tarry substance inside certainly isn’t sand . . . and that brought her back to Ramon.”

Treat yourself.

Please go see Sandy’s new post, “One Single Impression: Abundance”, here.

Here’s my comment:

I pray well when I go slowly, softly, silently.
Listening more than thinking.
I did the same on my third reading of Abundance.
The slower the better.
Zen is not a four letter word.
Then I saw the first snow flakes.

Yeah, That’s What he MEANT To Say January 8, 2011

An Arizona U.S. Congresswoman was shot and critically injured along with more than 10 other people at an Arizona grocery store Saturday morning. Six of those shot are dead.

House Speaker John Boehner said he was “horrified” by the shooting. “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve,” he said. “Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society.”

Perhaps what he MEANT to say is that an attack on an American is an attack on all peace-loving Americans. Acts and threats of violence against Americans have no place in our society.

Yeah, he may spin it that that’s what he MEANT to say.

But that’s not what he said.

Here We Go Again January 2, 2011

PLEASE SEE THE UPDATE BELOW

Some senior officers in the Navy are acting poorly. Visibly. Back when, it was Lisa Nowak, Captain and adulterer *. Then Holly Graf, now this guy:

“The Navy is investigating a series of raunchy videos featuring a top officer aboard the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier that were reportedly filled with profanity and mocking references to homosexuality. In the videos, which were produced in 2006 and 2007 and excerpts of which were first obtained and reported by the Norfolk, Va., newspaper The Virginian-Pilot, the ship’s then-No. 2 officer Capt. Owen Honors [who is now the Commanding Officer of the ship] is seen using gay slurs and mimicking masturbation as he introduces a number of comedic sketches that were broadcast to the ship’s nearly 6,000-member crew. ” ABC News, by Kirit Radia. * Thanks to Mark for reminding me.

Lots of questions here: why did it take so long? What did his bosses know about it, and do about it, at the time? Why is he still wearing the uniform? Why isn’t the Inspector General all over this? And, how fast can we get him off the front page and retired as a, say, Lieutenant?

UPDATE Admiral John Harvey, Commander Fleet Forces Command, relieved Capt. Honor on January 4th and replaced him with an accomplished Captain who recently commanded another carrier in wartime. The investigation revealed enough to support the firing, but Admiral Harvey is continuing the investigation, to learn the rest of the story. I like Admiral Harvey!

Someone has organized a campaign for signatures on Facebook in support of Captain Honor. “He didn’t do so wrong; he made us smile while we were deployed.” This is a great opportunity to explain to these young people why we don’t run the Navy like a sock hop.

“When Congress reconvenes next week, it will be the first time in 64 years that there has not been a Kennedy in office.

“I think it is sad,” Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, daughter of Robert Kennedy and a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, told ABC News. “I think we need a Kennedy.” ABC News, by JOHN HENDREN and DANIEL STEINBERGER

Well, apparently public office just couldn’t beat the competition. Which one was hiring, Ringling Brothers or Barnum and Bailey?
