Florida’s Manatees December 11, 2010

Posted by gregquill in Uncategorized.

We’ve all seen pictures of Florida’s manatees, the big cow-like water animals that are easily killed by motorboat propellers.

Now cold weather is killing them off. Since January 1 2010, 699 manatees have died, most of them due to the severe drop in temperatures last winter. Now in December, we have another cold snap which may drive the record number of deaths up even higher.

Here in Bradenton, there is the Manatee Technical Institute, a community college. But I don’t think many manatees will graduate this year because it’s too cold to study.
