A Little Incident October 6, 2006

. .

Just a little problem last night, in Apex, NC.

The EQ Industrial Services plant (Environmental Quality) on the east side of town caught on fire.

My house is less than two miles west of the plant. Lacy and I are still in Illinois, so we weren’t evacuated with our neighbors. The town has 32,000 people and 17,000 were ordered to leave.

Chlorine gas was the main contaminant in the air this morning. There has been some rain, which is putting out the fire and breaking up the gas clouds.

They got a $32,000 fine from North Carolina Department of the Environment and Natural Resources in March 2006 for:

Failing to:

– maintain and operate the facility to minimize the possibility of a sudden or non-sudden release of hazardous waste constituents to air, soil or surface water which could threaten human health or the environment

– immediately carry out the provisions of the contingency plan whenever there is a release of hazardous waste or constituents which threatens or could threaten human health or the environment

-not store a container of hazardous waste that is incompatible with any waste or material stored

– complete inspection log book and place in designated log-book area

– maintain aisle space of 24 inches

– and clearly mark to identify container contents and the date each period of accumulation begins.

You are lucky you weren’t here. Most of the people who had to leave will not be allowed back for another 10-12 hours, because the fires are still burning (despite all the rain and the fireman’s efforts). I hear that the same company had a $500K fine last year for a fire in another state.

Everyone I know from work from that area is pretty grouchy!

I’m glad that we weren’t there. I thought that the town manager’s comments were inappropriate, so I sent an e-mail to the mayor. Apparently no one got hurt, so that’s good.

Why do we let hazardous waste people keep their dumps within the town?!
